Dr. and Mrs. Harold Greer Jr. Professorship in Latin American History

The College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University has embarked on a cluster hire in Migration Studies: Focus Latin America to enhance the study of Latin American migration at VCU and position the university as a thought leader in addressing the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly diverse nation. Three new tenure-eligible faculty positions were filled last year in the departments of Sociology, Kinesiology and Health Sciences, and the School of World Studies. The Department of History now seeks applications for the newly established Dr. and Mrs. Harold Greer Jr. Professorship in Latin American History. We are seeking a historian specialized in Mexico, Central America, or South America. Sub-fields of specialization may include, but are not limited to, internal and transnational migrations, indigenous peoples and cultures, globalization and environmental issues, state violence, and science, medicine, and technology. Teaching responsibilities include surveys of Latin American history and courses in the candidate's areas of expertise at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The Greer Professor is envisioned as a key contributor to the Migration Studies initiative and will also be responsible for organizing an annual public lecture on Latin American History.

Required qualifications include: a PhD in History. At the Assistant Professor level, candidates should demonstrate an established research agenda, potential for external funding, and scholarship that complements and expands existing expertise in the department. At the Associate/Professor level, candidates should demonstrate a well-developed scholarly portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications, supportive external funding, scholarship that complements and expands existing expertise in the department. Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as faculty member at VCU. Strong interpersonal skills are critical for this position as collaboration and program advocacy across the university, local communities, and beyond are a vital component. Ideally, the successful candidate will contribute to expanding VCU's engagement with the Latinx communities on and off campus.

Preferred qualifications include native- or near native proficiency in Spanish, potential for developing and delivering professional development programming, and potential for engaging students in research experiences.
