Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Penn State Abington seeks a candidate with a demonstrated passion for working with marginalized student populations and helping them to flourish in a campus environment. The successful candidate will have a proven track record for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in higher education along with experience in developing/supporting data-driven persistence and retention initiatives for underrepresented, underserved and 1st generation student populations. This position will develop, implement, and monitor programs, initiatives, and events that assist in the recruitment and retention of minoritized students, and offer guidance and support to these populations. We seek a candidate with strong interpersonal skills, political savvy, and sensitivity to engage effectively with a broad range of stakeholders and the ability to build consensus. The incumbent will display a broad-based knowledge of diverse populations with an emphasis on multicultural, LGBTQ, underrepresented, and underserved populations of ethnic and racial cultures, faith traditions, domestic, and international communities. The position serves as a formal convener for a range of partner units and initiatives whose work regularly engages college access and success, diversity and inclusion. The position reports to the Director of Student Affairs. In addition to its important cross-campus coordinating role, the position directly supervises the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs, and events, professional and paraprofessional staff. Position responsibilities: Design and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for retention, persistence and graduation of underrepresented and underserved populations; Lead planning and assessment efforts to determine the effectiveness of programs and services offered in order to create a more consistently welcoming and inclusive campus climate for people of different backgrounds, experiences, and social identities. Work closely with relevant institutional offices in use of data tools - campus climate surveys, demographic studies, policy analyses, etc. - benchmarking and assessment to compile statistics and generate reports regarding campus equity and diversity efforts, and success of students of color and marginalized/underserved student groups. Develop metrics for programs, services and initiatives; and provide analysis and data reports to improve programs, services and initiatives; Serve as a visible campus resource and partner for faculty, staff, administrators, and other stakeholders, providing expertise and counsel. Collaborates and consults with faculty and key stakeholders to promote efforts to improve retention and success rates for targeted student populations; Embraces an institutional culture of care, social justice, equity, and access; Oversees diversity and social justice education programming for the campus including Safe Zone, Stand for State, etc.; Supervises professional and para professional staff. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Skills Needed: Demonstrated experience as a collaborative leader who inspires confidence and trust. Demonstrated understanding of intersecting identities that include, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, and socio-economic status. Demonstrated analytical and research skills, in addition to project management experience. Ability to build coalitions and consensus; with proven success as an organizational change agent. Excellent administrative and organizational skills including supervision, budget management, student advising, student learning, and program development. Experience with securing funding for diversity initiatives. Demonstrated experience promoting dialogue among students, faculty, and staff as well as with community members, and other university constituencies. Proven ability to inspire and nurture a climate of inclusiveness, collegiality, and shared responsibility.
