Position Summary
The Major Gifts Officer is an integral member of the development team responsible for soliciting gifts of $25,000 and above to support the mission of the university. The Major Gifts Officer will cultivate and manage relationships with new and prospective donors, including identifying, soliciting and stewarding donors. Of critical importance will be the ability to work cooperatively with and in support of foundation board members, affiliates, development staff, university president and other members of the university's leadership team. The Major Gifts Officer must be a highly energetic, organized and enthusiastic professional with a demonstrated track record of closing gifts, working collaboratively and strategically, with a strong knowledge of principles, ethics and practices of successful fund raising.

Minimum Classification Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.
Five years of demonstrated successful fund raising experience in major, annual or planned giving, or corporate and foundation relations in higher education or related field.
Ability to listen and understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop and strengthen relationships and partnerships.
Interest in and a passion for all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the university's fund raising priorities for the benefit of the campus.
Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal). Ability to build bridges and strong collaborative relationships across a complex organization.
Willingness and ability to travel frequently throughout the state and across the United States.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with Raiser's Edge fundraising database.

This position must possess and maintain a current, valid Driver License.

* Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.

* Excellent organizational and time management skills.

* Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.

* Ability to adapt to and work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment which requires regular interaction with a number of levels within the organization.

* Working knowledge, or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies and procedures.

Special Conditions

* Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.

* Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

* Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.

* This position classification has been defined as exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

* The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the Oregon Revised Statues and is required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Oregon department of Human Services.

Job Duties

Duties
Manage a portfolio of 100-120 prospects. Participate in all aspects of the philanthropic gift cycle. Initiate contacts with potential donors and further existing relationships.

1. Develop appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.
2. Make assessment calls, cultivate, solicit, provide recognition, and steward appropriate major gifts.
3. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift and planned giving donors and prospects with a particular focus on individual outright major gifts.
4. Build relationships with donors and coordinate solicitation as appropriate with university and foundation leaders.
5. Develop, recruit, and engage the President, Trustees, Vice Presidents, Division Directors, faculty, alumni and staff to assist in major and planned giving cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
6. Prepare planned gift proposals and facilitate planned giving agreements with outside advisors.
7. Document all activity in Raiser's Edge database.
