Professor and Founding Director of OUWB Eye Center

The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine (OUWB) invites applications and nominations for the position of Professor & Founding Director of the OUWB Eye Center (EC). This is an exciting opportunity to develop, expand, and administer a new program, which will include research partners from the Oakland University (OU) Eye Research Institute (ERI) and William Beaumont Hospital Department of Ophthalmology. This is a full time, 12-month tenured position within the Department of Foundational Medical Studies. This new initiative will focus on advancing vision health via research excellence in vision science and ophthalmology.

The successful candidate will have an M.D., DO and/or Ph.D., academic credentials qualifying for appointment as Professor in the OUWB Department of Foundational Medical Studies, a distinguished record of scholarly activity, and an internationally recognized vision research program. This appointment will include a seat on the OUWB Council of Chairs and Program Directors, and will, therefore, have a programmatic reporting relationship to the OUWB Dean. The new Director will also lead the OU Eye Research Institute (ERI), report directly to the OU Provost for matters pertaining to the ERI, and will be eligible for the inaugural V. Everett Kinsey Endowed Professorship.

In addition to maintaining a nationally competitive research program, the Founding Director is expected to maximize current assets, recruit new faculty, enhance interactions between partnering institutions, and build the research enterprise by strengthening and broadening the OUWB EC's resource base; they must, therefore, possess exceptional communication and collaborative leadership skills.

The Founding Director's faculty appointment will be with an Investigator focus (research track). The Investigator focus is reserved for individuals whose academic activities are predominately dedicated to basic, translational, population-based and/or clinical research. The Founding Director will be afforded an administrative stipend for serving as the Founding Director of the OUWB Eye Center with an expectation of significant salary recovery from external research funding.

General Responsibilities:
1. Promotes and coordinates investigator-initiated research for the OUWB EC, the OU ERI, other OU faculty, and faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology in partnership with the OUWB School of Medicine Department Chair of Ophthalmology.
2. Develops and implements other Center-based activities that support research (lecture series, visiting scholars, etc.).
3. Provides leadership and direction to ERI faculty, staff and students. Oversee ERI undergraduate and graduate research.
4. Works with investigators, administration and information technology to develop and sustain the vision and infrastructure required for interdisciplinary research focusing on vision and eye research.
5. Serves as program director for the OUWB EC and attends chair's meetings.
6. Develops synergistic research collaborations and educational initiatives with investigators at OUWB, other Oakland University colleges, the (BRI), and other institutions;
7. Participates in independent and collaborative, extramurally funded academic and scholarly activities,
8. Provides mentorship and assistance to faculty and trainees involved in vision/eye research.
9. Provides instruction in various settings, including the instruction of medical students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
10. Participates in faculty promotion and tenure reviews for the OU ERI and OUWB EC.
11. Provides mentorship and assistance to faculty and trainees.
12. Serves on appropriate University, School of Medicine and Departmental Committees.
13. Be visible within the University and the community, nationally and internationally.
14. Ensures OU ERI and OUWB EC regulatory compliance and safe working conditions.
15. Works with the OU Advancement Office regarding donor funding.
16. Helps maintain a high level of ERI and ERC morale and maintain the utmost ethical and moral standards at all times.

Candidates must have:
1. Demonstrated commitment to advancing a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion and serving a diverse population.
2. Demonstrated experience creating and/or leading innovative programs and initiatives
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work well with educators and clinical faculty in both academic and community settings
4. An outstanding track record of community engagement.
5. Exceptional service orientation and commitment to teamwork.Minimum Qualifications include:
A. A Ph.D., DO and/or M.D. Degree
B. Academic credentials commensurate with the rank of professor.
C. A distinguished record of scholarly activity as evidenced by a strong publication record and a vigorous, internationally recognized vision research program.
D. A record exhibiting consistent ability to attract extramural research support, as well as showing effective administrative and management skills.
E. An ability to provide departmental leadership and management, while maintaining his or her own active eye research program.
F. Demonstrated commitment to advancing a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion and serving a diverse population
G. Exemplary communication skills.
