The Collat School of Business at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks applicants for the position of Chair of the Accounting and Finance (ACFN) Department. The selected individual will appreciate and embrace each of the disciplines housed in the department, and will provide leadership and a vision for further academic, research, and service collaborations within the Collat School of Business (CSoB), across UAB, and within our business community. The individual will report directly to the Dean.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide leadership in developing and implementing the department's strategic plan and vision that aligns with the goals of the School

* Shape the future of the department by working with faculty and staff to develop and articulate the departmental vision and goals

* Maintain a departmental climate that is hospitable and encourages faculty and staff engagement, participation, collegiality, and innovation in an environment of shared governance

* Grow the academic unit by improving existing academic programs, developing new and innovative academic programs that align with the School's and University's strategic plan, including those that advance UAB's interdisciplinary culture

* Adhere to the principles of shared academic governance, especially the collaborative development of appropriate procedures for governance

* Ensure the delivery of high-quality teaching and support faculty teaching enhancement

* Maintain a high quality academic environment that supports faculty research and participation in academic communities

* Manage day-to-day administrative activities including student advising and counseling, scheduling courses, coordinating faculty schedules, and monitoring and being responsive to student success metrics

* Manage AACSB Accounting Accreditation Continuous Improvement Review

* Formulate and communicate recommendations for hiring, tenure, promotion, retention and evaluation of a diverse set of faculty and departmental support staff

* Prepare budget requests, establish expenditure priorities, and fairly and equitably administer the department budget

* Act as the representative of the department to build support and visibility among internal constituencies within UAB

* Act as the representative of the department to build support and visibility among external constituencies, such as local industry, government, and the broader Birmingham community

* Identify and facilitate fundraising opportunities that enhance the school's and department's goals

Required Qualification

Terminal degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field as well as academic credentials that qualify the candidate for the rank of a tenured full professor appointment to the UAB faculty

* Successful experience in managing AASCB Continuous Improvement Review

* Proven experience in University-level teaching, research, and administration

* Experience developing and growing traditional and online academic programs

* Demonstrated knowledge of higher education issues at the national and global level

* Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and fairness, and the promotion of academic values

* Strong commitment to high standards and rigor in teaching and research

* Managerial/supervisory experience and commitment to mentoring faculty, instructors, and staff

* Strong commitment to continued diversification of the ACFN faculty and student body, especially with regard to the recruitment and retention of women and under-represented minorities

* Proven experience in building alliances and partnerships across the school, university, and beyond with the business community and other stakeholders

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build consensus

* Strong time management, organizational skills, and budgeting experience

About the University

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a research university and academic health center that discovers, teaches and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social and economic benefit of Birmingham, the state and beyond. The Collat School Of Business

The mission of the Collat School of Business is to create and disseminate business knowledge that transforms the lives of our students and stakeholders by leveraging our locational advantages for the benefit of our local, national and global stakeholders. We also strive to be a business school known for leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship. Our support of faculty, staff and student activities actively advance our mission and vision. Because of our success in these areas, our teaching, research and service have had wide-reaching impacts not only on our students' lives, but also on our community and our key stakeholders. The School has over 2,600 undergraduates and 720 graduate students with 70 full-time faculty members and 32 administrative and professional staff. Accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and separately accredited in Accounting, our professors are accomplished researchers, publishing papers and textbooks that contribute to the ever-growing body of knowledge within the business disciplines. The School's mission is accomplished through three academic departments: Accounting and Finance (ACFN), Management, Information Systems and Quantitative Methods (MISQ), and Marketing, Industrial Distribution and Economics (MIDE). We currently offer undergraduate majors in accounting, finance, management, human resources, information systems, marketing, industrial distribution and economics. We also offer three masters programs: MBA, Management Information Systems and Accounting.

Accounting and Finance (ACFN) Department

The Department includes 17 faculty members and 7 full-time instructors, covering two majors and supporting both the MBA program and the business core. The accounting program offers an undergraduate degree as well as a Master in Accounting. Both accounting degree programs have been separately accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for more than 30 years. The finance program offers 3 concentrations: Financial Management, Investments and Institutions, and Real Estate. Degree programs in both accounting and finance are offered on campus and online. Students can also complete minors in accounting and finance.
