Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mission is to lead the northern Illinois community in solving hunger by providing nutritious meals to those in need through innovative programs and partnerships.  Working collaboratively with a community of donors, volunteers and feeding programs, the food bank provides food across 13 northern Illinois counties each week. Northern Illinois Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has received Charity Navigator’s 4-Star rating for fourteen consecutive years for its fiscal responsibility. Ninety-seven percent of the food bank’s resources go to programs that feed the hungry.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective
Northern Illinois Food Bank is dedicated to following sound financial principles for non-profit organizations that will insure the longevity and sustainability of our organization. This position will oversee and direct the Finance and Accounting functions for the Food Bank. As part of the executive management team, this position will also participate in the Organizational Strategy Team.

Financial & management reporting and analysis, regulatory reporting, internal controls, treasury management, risk management and oversight of IT function.

Essential Functions

  1. Manage team of 2 Accountants and 1 Senior Accounting Analyst.
  2. Responsible for oversight of all financial functions of the Food Bank, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Grant Accounting, General Ledger Accounting, preparation of financial statements and Banking and Investments.
  3. Develop, implement and maintain all financial policies and procedures.
  4. Oversee and prepare budgeting and monthly reporting for government-funded programs.
  5. Oversee annual financial audit process and prepare audit information for areas of responsibility.
  6. Oversee the preparation of annual audit-format financial statements, Statement of Federal Expenditures and 990 reporting package. Oversee the preparation of information for annual letter to agencies of federal awards.
  7. Oversee payroll processing and payroll taxes. Provide approval of bi-weekly payroll.
  8. Manage inventory valuation processes and subledger reconciliations. Participate in the review of monthly and annual inventory counts. Work with inventory team to improve inventory processes.

  13. Oversee monthly bank, investment account and 401k account reconciliations and quarterly petty cash reconciliation, insuring appropriate segregation of duties.
  14. Manage the Food Bank’s banking relationships. Direct the organization’s banking by negotiating bank loans, lines of credit, etc.
  15. Manage investments
  16. Oversee review of contracts for entire organization. Maintain central file of contracts.
  17. Assist the CEO in the preparation of the annual operating budget and strategic plan updates.  Provide assistance to individual department heads in the preparation and maintenance of departmental operational budgets, consolidating these budgets and reviewing actual performance against budgeted performance. Prepare reports explaining budget deviations and overall financial performance.

Skills, Education, & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Seven plus years of experience leading an Accounting and/or Finance team with experience in inventory accounting required. CFO experience for a non-profit organization is highly desired.
  • CPA or demonstrated up-to-date knowledge of the unique requirements in non-profit accounting is required.
  • Experience with reporting and audit requirements for federal funding is desired.
  • Advanced Excel Skills and proficiency in Power Point, Word, and Microsoft Office. 
  • Excellent analytical skills and advanced skills in turning data into relevant and useful information based on understanding of the organization and its operations.
  • Technologically savvy and process driven.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Shows leadership and initiative in taking on new projects and improving business processes.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teamwork, working cross-functionally across and at different levels in the organization. 

 

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machine.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to move files, open filing cabinets and position self on a stool as necessary.
