Materials Department

The Materials Department in the College of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is seeking applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Structural Materials.

Candidates should demonstrate the ability to develop a leading research program on novel structural materials with properties relevant to extreme thermomechanical environments. Areas of potential interest include unique synthesis and processing approaches that exert control from the nanoscale to the mesoscale, novel electrochemical processing paths that could produce highly engineered interfaces with unique functionalities, and materials design and processing enhanced by data science, sensors and computational materials science. Emphasis on experimental research is highly desirable. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a record of publication in scholarly journals and the disposition and ability for collaborative research.

Appointment would be effective July 1, 2019 or later. Candidate must hold a Ph.D. in a science or engineering field by the time of the appointment.

2. One Full-Time Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (synonymous to a tenure-track teaching Professor) in the Area of Mechanical Design

This position is intended for an innovative individual with an enthusiasm for, and breadth of knowledge in, mechanical design and its emerging applications in diverse fields. A successful applicant should be committed to teaching and mentoring undergraduates, to improving the undergraduate mechanical engineering program, and to recruiting talented and diverse high-school graduates in collaboration with other faculty. The ideal candidate will engage, excite, and challenge students in problem solving with a combination of design creativity and engineering analysis. Teaching assignments may include topics such as machine elements, machine design, joint design and analysis, adhesive bonding and welding, machine dynamics and fatigue, design process, design for manufacturing, teamwork, project planning, creative thinking, engineering graphics, and CAD. Consequently, the ideal candidate should be interested and experienced in teaching in different educational settings - from small, project-oriented, inquiry-based

classes, to larger, more traditional, lecture-oriented classes. The teaching load is 3 courses per quarter with possible load reduction for administrative service. Service will begin with the 2019-20 academic year.

A PhD degree in engineering or science and a demonstrated record of teaching excellence is required.

Postdoctoral Fellowships in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology

The American Museum of Natural History seeks highly qualified applicants for its Gerstner Postdoctoral Scholars program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Successful applicants will pursue independent and collaborative computational research in integrative studies of genomics, spatial bioinformatics or biodiversity informatics, alongside faculty and other researchers interested in phylogenetics, phylogeography, evolutionary, and high- throughput phenomic/phenotypic studies. Gerstner Scholars in Bioinformatics & Computational Biology (GSB&CB) also will contribute to the design, development and implementation of new algorithms and other bioinformatics tools that are customized for Museum research and address emerging big data issues in phylogenetic and comparative biology analyses. In association with their professional development and contributions to the Museum, a portion of each Scholars' efforts will include teaching and workshops (with the Richard Gilder Graduate School and Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics) and assistance to Museum scientists and students with their bioinformatics and computational biology research.

The initial appointment will be for one year, potentially renewable for one to two additional years based on performance, and includes a highly competitive salary and generous benefits.

Requirements: Applicants must have a PhD in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, Genomics, or a related discipline, with experience in the bioinformatics of large biological data sets. Proficiency in Python, Perl, and/or R is required, and familiarity with those and other languages, such as C++/C, or Java, is desirable. Candidates should have documented skills in genome informatics, such as sequence processing, de novo and reference guided assembly, read mapping, gene annotation and discovery, and/or processing phenomic, transcriptomic, or phylogenomic datasets. Candidates should have extensive research experience with a solid publication record, ideally with some experience in phylogenetic methods, and excellent interpersonal, writing and problem-solving skills.

Professional Duties: At HSU, teaching effectiveness is essential for faculty retention, tenure, and promotion.Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to teach and supervise research across several major topics in cultural anthropology and develop their own research program. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students, and may include the following courses: introductory cultural anthropology, anthropology and development, anthropological history, methods and theory for majors and/or graduate students, and upper level and graduate courses with professional emphasis (such as immigration studies, medical anthropology, international development, etc.) and regional focus upon an area of specialization. Graduate courses will include the study of policy (plans, principles, guidelines, directives, or other ways of conceiving blueprints for and assessments of social action) as well as grant-writing and other professional skill-building content.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching; research, scholarship and creative activity; and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions including assessment of learning. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure and promotion.

In Natural Resource Economics and Political Economy

The S.V. CiriacyWantrup Postdoctoral Fellowships in Natural Resource Economics and Political Economy will be awarded for the 201920 academic year to support advanced research at the University of California, Berkeley.

For the purposes of this fellowship, natural resources are defined broadly to include environmental resources. The fellowship encourages, but is not limited to, policyoriented research. Applications are open to scholars from any social science discipline and related professional fields such as law and planning, who will make significant contributions to research on natural resource economics broadly defined. Preference will be given to proposals whose orientation is broadly institutional and/or historical, and which are conceptually and theoretically innovative. Proposals with a primarily statistical or econometric purpose are not eligible for consideration.

The purpose of the fellowship is to develop new and innovative intellectual connections and ideas in natural resources economics and political economy at UC Berkeley. Accordingly, Applicants should provide specific information about the project proposed for the fellowship period, and explain why support from the fellowship and the opportunity to work at Berkeley are important for the success of that project. We welcome proposals from applicants who have not received their PhD at UC Berkeley. Proposals from UC Berkeley doctoral graduates that outline a significant change in research direction and that indicate engagement with different disciplines and faculty from those pursued during the doctoral program will be considered.

Basic Qualifications:
Advanced degree or enrolled in advanced degree program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications:
PhD, JD, (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date. The candidate may have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD or equivalent international degree in Natural Resource Economics and/or Political Economy or a related field.

Appointment:

The Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary lecturers to teach courses as needed in the areas of American Politics, California Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Methodology & Formal Theory, Political Theory & Philosophy, Models & Politics, Political Behavior, Public Law & Jurisprudence, and Public Policy & Organization.

The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 33% to 100%, depending on the number of classes being taught. Appointments typically start at the beginning of the semester and may be renewed based on need, funding, and performance.

General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g. syllabus), and maintaining a course website.

Basic Qualifications: The minimum qualifications required to be an applicant is a Completion of Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) is required at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications: Completion of all Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree requirements except dissertation at the time of application or, full-time paid political experience of at least 4 years within the last 10 years.

Salary: Salary will be based on applicant's teaching experience, appointment % FTE, and current campus salary scales in place at time of appointment. The current minimum salary for this position would be based on a full-time annual salary of $54,738. Lecturers teaching one course per semesters are typically appointed at a 33% rate.

Departmental Overview

The Senior Advisor to the EVCP works closely with him in setting his short- and long-term priorities, and staffing him across the range of his responsibilities especially those relating to philanthropy and external relations, strategic plan implementation, and academic planning. S/he interfaces with a broad range of offices to support the EVCP's activities, managing sensitive and confidential matters and developing solutions on a wide range of issues on his behalf.

The EVCP works in very close partnership with the Chancellor and serves as the Chancellor's second-in-command. The Senior Advisor directly supports the EVCP, and works closely with EVCP's chief of staff and other senior staff, to advance the institution's priorities, anticipate emerging issues, keeping the EVCP and his senior administration well-informed and working closely with them to develop creative options and to resolve complex problems.

Responsibilities

The Senior Advisor provides timely and appropriate executive advising and support for the Executive Vice-Chancellor & Provost, helping him set his short and long term priorities and directly staffing him on those priorities. Currently the three primary areas in which the Executive Advisor 5 supports and advises the EVCP are:

1. Philanthropy and external relations, including donor relations and communications, entrepreneurial initiatives, Board of Visitors activities;
2. Strategic plan implementation, currently including student experience and signature initiatives;
3. Academic planning, currently including data science implementation, digital strategy, and discovery experience.

In the scope of these responsibilities, the Senior Advisor supports the EVCP by:

* Participating with the EVCP and other executives in short and long-term strategic planning with Campus-wide impact; steering and coordinating the implementation of long- and short-term strategic and operational plans.

* Ensuring schedules and plans are established, parties are informed and prepared, and any barriers (i.e., resource allocation, training, staffing, etc.) are brought to the attention of the appropriate senior leaders and/or groups for resolution.

* Providing campus-wide influence on the identification and framing of systemic issues, and the formulation and advancement of approaches to address them.

* Representing the EVCP with authority to make decisions on high-level task forces and long- and short-range strategic planning groups.

* Negotiating directly to achieve solutions with high level stakeholders such as faculty, senate committee chairs, senior administrators, other UC locations, Office of the President, public agencies and the community to develop solutions to complex campus problems.

* Providing the EVCP with timely and balanced views of current and emerging campus issues/problems and suggesting options for dealing with them.

* Providing framework for policy and administrative change, participating in change management, developing strategies to remove barriers to goal achievement.

* Triaging relevant issues, negotiating solutions to complex problems, and handling confidential and sensitive issues on behalf of the EVCP

* Coordinating meetings and briefings with senior leadership and the EVCP, participating as appropriate, and managing follow-up.

* Developing and/or reviewing items for the EVCP's signature; formulating recommendations and presenting options, and drafting responses.

* Directing, analyzing, and preparing recommendations for resource plans having critical, campus-wide impact.

* Independently performing the most complex research and studies for both internal department and external campus constituents.

Supporting EVCP Office operations:

* Collaborate closely with the EVCP's chief of staff to ensure seamless support to the EVCP and excellent teamwork with the office staff.

* Serve as primary backup to the chief of staff when they are not in the office.

Required Qualifications

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advance of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. 3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students using multi-modal approaches and student-centered andragogy.
4. Community college teaching experience in the areas of child development theory and curriculum.
5. Relevant coursework and/or experience integrating culturally relevant curricula into the classroom.
6. Ability and willingness to seek outside funding sources and prepare funding proposals for Child Development projects and instruction.
7. Ability and willingness to integrate Child Development instructional program with the Child Development Center.
8. Experience collaborating with faculty or community leaders in programs or initiatives that are specifically designed to help historically underrepresented students achieve their educational goals.
9. Ability to instruct and motivate students with differing needs and abilities from a variety of cultural, socioeconomic and language backgrounds.
10. Holds a Master Teacher level permit from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing or is eligible to obtain one within six months.
11. Experience with online teaching and course management systems such as Canvas.
