The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California at Santa Barbara is accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the broad area of signal processing and communications, with an effective appointment date of July 1, 2019. The Department has particular (non-exclusive) interest in applicants with a depth of expertise in data science, machine learning, and related fields, along with broader interests and the ability to collaborate with faculty across disciplines.

Candidates should have an established research reputation or outstanding research potential, the ability to attract external research funding, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.

A Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a closely related field is required and expected by the time of appointment. We seek an accomplished artist with a proven track record working at the intersection of physical and digital media. The successful candidate will have a clearly articulated art practice and demonstrated expertise in the integration of computer programming with traditional craft and hands-on making skills. We will consider qualified applicants working in a wide range of areas, including though not limited to: digital and hybrid fabrication, multi-sensory feedback, physical and wearable computing, 3D modeling and 3D printing, micro-electronics and circuit design, sensing, smart materials, e-textiles, biomimetics, and speculative design.

Applicants should have a strong commitment to teaching and an enthusiasm for alerting students to the multiple possibilities opened up for young artists in at least one of these emergent, fast-evolving fields of study. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in curriculum development and will design and teach a wide variety of courses ranging from undergraduate studio classes and large undergraduate lecture courses to advanced graduate seminars.

The Department of Art offers BA and MFA degrees in Art and interdisciplinary minors in Digital Art and Public Art within the dynamic setting of a world-class research university. We provide contemporary, traditional, multi- and interdisciplinary approaches to artistic production and are committed to creative research that investigates the relationship between practice and inquiry within the larger context of historical and contemporary cultural concerns (see http://www.arts.ucsb.edu). The successful candidate will find ample opportunities for collaboration with faculty and students in other departments across campus and in programs affiliated with the Department of Art such as Media Arts Technology (MAT), a graduate program situated across the College of Engineering and the College of Letters & Science (Humanities and Fine Arts Division) and the College of Creative Studies (CCS) which offers undergraduate research foci in Art, Biology, Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Writing and Composition.
