Reports To: Associate Dean for Academic Advising, Transfer Counseling and Career Services

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Academic Counselor is a creative and knowledgeable professional who works collaboratively with other staff in the Academic, Career and Transfer Center to provide developmental academic advising services with prospective and enrolled students from diverse backgrounds. This counselor will actively contribute to the growth, development and activities of the Academic, Career and Transfer Counseling department. They work with students to help them develop educational plans that are consistent with their individual needs, abilities and goals. They will provide information about educational options, admission to selective programs, major and course selection, financial aid information, graduation requirements, transfer to baccalaureate degree programs, and college policies and procedures. Academic counselors will also assist students with all aspects of the transfer process. This position will work in close collaboration with the Assistant Directors - Admissions, program coordinators, and appropriate Directors and Deans.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

* Contribute to the development of the Academic, Career, and Transfer Counseling Department and its programs through active participation in the departmental/divisional planning and assessment initiatives.

* Participate fully in the responsibilities of the Academic, Career and Transfer Advising department in the following departmental activities:

Advise a caseload of students and assisting walk-in students.

*
Recruitment activities including high school visits, information sessions, open houses, workshops and on-campus events for prospective students.

*
Group and individual Advising/Registration Sessions, individual academic advising, Career and Transfer Fairs, and other major departmental initiatives.

*
Selective program admission reviews, graduation review, satisfactory academic progress review, and tele-counseling activities.

* Responsible for working with students using a developmental advising approach by:

Providing in-depth admission, advising, career and transfer information to students from recruitment through graduation and transfer.

*
Working with students to assist them in developing meaningful educational and financial plans to meet their goals.

*
Working with 1st time/transfer students as assigned to embed developmental advising in student's first year experience; Advising Syllabus, Degree Works, career exploration, etc.

*
Providing students with information concerning programs, careers, salaries, courses, transfer credit, etc.

*
Providing outreach to students who may be experiencing academic or financial difficulty determined by deficiency grades, early warning systems, class withdrawals or referrals. Once trained, respond to SARS Early Alert emails and outreach students experiencing academic difficulty.

*
Telecounseling initiatives related to student retention; Melt Calls, Financial Planning Calls, etc.

* Work with assigned Academic Division as liaison between the Academic, Career and Transfer Advising department and that Division.

* Perform administrative tasks as necessary to achieve departmental goals, including:.

Awarding transfer credit.

Granting testing exemptions.

Serving on college-wide, divisional and departmental committees as approved by supervisor.





Requirements:



SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:

* Master's degree in education, counseling, or closely related field with two (2) years experience or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

* Experience and/or knowledge working with students, staff and faculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

* Demonstrated understanding of academic advising, transfer counseling; knowledge of career advising a plus

* Demonstrated ability to develop and apply inclusive counseling methods that engage individuals of diverse learning styles, abilities and backgrounds

* Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the community college mission and student population

* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with college deans, faculty and staff

* Strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Normal office environment, not subject to extreme variations of temperature, noise, odors, etc.

Regularly uses computer keyboards requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.

More than half of time spent in normal office setting.





Additional Information:



SALARY: Grade 5 ($50,785 - $73,639). Starting salary within this range is dependent upon experience in a closely related position.
